Well… not the famous Christian thing you may have thought of. This time we will discuss another Holy Trinity.
In one corner of this triangle, we find the Muslims. They believe that Muhammad traveled overnight from Mecca to Jerusalem, to the Temple Mount, and later also rode a horse from there to heaven to meet Allah. For them, the place that the Jews call the “Temple Mount”, and they call the “Haram al-Sharif” – is a holy place for Islam, and mayhem must be stirred up if members of other religion hold their religious rituals there.
In the second corner of the triangle, we find the sector consisting of “traditional Jews” and what’s known as “national-religious Jews”, especially those close in their views to the Israeli right-wing. They believe that the above-mentioned place belongs in its entirety to the Jews, and that it is their right and even their duty to visit it and perform various rituals there – from praying and bowing down to slaughtering innocent animals in there, not to mention rebuilding the mythical Hebrew temple we read about in the biblical stories.
In the third corner, we meet the fast-growing ultra-Orthodox “Haredi” Jewish sector. They believe that it is absolutely forbidden for Jews to set foot in this place, and that whoever does so is an apostate, a heretic and a blasphemer of God. According to their education, “God” – and ONLY him – will eventually cause the place to belong to the Jews and the Temple to exist, and until then – one should not try to upset God by acting in this direction independently.
Three groups. Each “knows” that the other two are wrong. Each group will use all its political power and pressures to prevent the other two from acting against that group’s way. All three feverishly claim to have heavenly justification, divine protection and insist they are the chosen ones.
And then there is also a fourth group. Sane secular people, quite a few Jews, Arabs and others, who separate beliefs from reality. These are the ones who keep suffering from the above delusional tri-way war.
