The following story and research were received from Jacob (pseudonym).<\/b><\/font><\/p>\n

A little about myself: My name is Jacob, I’m 21 years old, gay in the closet, originally from a Jewish ultra-Orthodox (“Haredi”) family. I’m a “science believer” (in my opinion, a “science believer” is someone who believes in science and nothing else, a total atheist).<\/p>\n

Throughout my life, I have experienced several sexual harassments and a rape. This included sexual harassment from a supposedly “righteous and important” Haredi person (at about age 12), sexual harassment from two “righteous” Yeshiva guys (around ages 12-14), and a rape by a construction worker (around age 13-14). It was terrible and horrible. I know, it sounds crazy – it’s true. I don’t really feel like talking about it, but it’s irrelevant to the point I’m trying to make here.<\/p>\n

By the way – Don’t worry, my life today is good and excellent overall. I am active and volunteer, I have an amazing partner, and I make a decent living. As mentioned, I did not come to publish my personal story, but to point out something that might be worth considering, related to sexual harassments, etc.<\/p>\n

According to recent studies, 63% of children in Israel treated for sexual abuse are Jewish religious and ultra-Orthodox (“Haredi”). According to the same data, this number is 1.4 times larger than the size of this group within the student population. Among the adult Jewish population, the total share of religious and ultra-Orthodox people combined is approximately 21%. (Based on research articles in the press and data from the Central Bureau of Statistics.)<\/p>\n

On top of this, the Haredi society tends to turn a blind eye to “things” that happen (especially sexual harassments, assault and rape cases) or to sweep them under the rug, while secular people are more open about the subject, and are more inclined to deal with it and less to hide it. In addition, in Haredi society there are many more stories about incest, and in general – there is no shortage of cases of harassment by rabbis in all kinds of seminars, Yeshiva’s and Torah schools. If we do a simple calculation, we find that among Haredi people specifically – there is significantly more sexual harassment and assault of all kinds than among secular people.<\/p>\n

Thus, the Haredi society encourages harassers, pedophiles, incest within the family, and sexual abuse. I know this from bitter experience and will not elaborate further. Several different points should be emphasized in this context:<\/p>\n

1. It only makes sense that if you forbid a group of very horny, young Yeshiva boys from engaging in any kind of sex until marriage, until they get married before the age of 20, and in fact only then can they do it – you will get many dissatisfied people, who are just looking for sex.<\/p>\n

2. In Haredi society, “healthy” marriages are not generally encouraged. They almost always match and marry quickly without much selection and thought. Of course, they also almost never divorce. In my humble opinion, this already creates dissatisfied people. In addition, Haredi women usually do not invest much in themselves and in their appearance, and this also creates a dissatisfied husband.<\/p>\n

3. A different sexual orientation (LGBTQ) is also not accepted at all in Haredi society. It is considered “forbidden”, “a crime”, and so on. This means that a Yeshiva guy who is attracted to men can only marry a woman, which also creates truly dissatisfied people and encourages sexual assault and rape.<\/p>\n

4. And an important point: As mentioned above, in Haredi society, if someone rapes or harms or harasses – they usually sweep it under the rug, and this is a well-known fact. I believe that this sweeping encourages the creation of new rapists, because if there is no deterrence – what will prevent rapists from doing whatever they want? I know that there is of course “the law”, but within Haredi society – they<\/b> are the law. And if the “law” (they) sweeps such things away, then there is no deterrence, and unfortunately such things will continue to happen.<\/p>\n

To sum things up, in my opinion, the ultra-Orthodox society produces harassers through its poor handling of this phenomenon. I think it’s worth investigating the matter and writing about it.<\/p>\n
