It was late Saturday morning. I was standing in front of the neighborhood library’s window. My eyes were browsing the books. Then I heard a shout behind me: “Hey! Don’t write on the Sabbath!” – Intuitively I turned my head back and, without changing my position, I looked at a Jewish religious man wearing a large knitted “kippah”. He was a short person, about my age, and had a solid build. His beard was turning gray, and he was looking at two children, a boy and a girl, about six years old.<\/p>\n

The boy was holding thin branches of a rosemary plant. He brought them closer to his nose and smelled them. The religious man, who was probably either his father or his grandfather, shouted again: “Don’t pick”. Then I understood. He said ‘picking’, not ‘writing’. In Hebrew these words sound similar. “Don’t pick flowers on the Sabbath!”<\/p>\n

A feeling of disbelief came over me: Why was he doing this to them?<\/p>\n

I continued to stare at him, to the point of feeling uncomfortable. I would certainly have felt uncomfortable if someone had looked at me like that. No, he didn’t notice me. The children passed me on their way to him. The boy, with his head down, grabbed the thin branch of rosemary, brought it close to his face, and smelled it. I’m sure the adult person is a good man. He loves his children. He’d do anything for them.<\/p>\n
