Many of us have studied the subject of “logic” formally, usually in academic-level courses. Even those who have not done so – know a lot about what “logic” is and often use its rules. We all sort of understand that if it is dark at night, and if it is dangerous in the dark – then it logically follows that it is dangerous at night.<\/p>\n
Without delving too deeply: “Formal” logic contains several basic rules by which we draw conclusions. Given that we have done so without error – then our conclusions are “solid” and cannot really be argued with. The rule we used in the example above (dealing with dangerous nights) is one of this set of rules.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, many people confuse pure logical rules with “human logic” which in many cases is derived from our own personal experience, the structure of our brains, and our feelings and emotions. Not everything we feel is “logical” is also “right”.<\/b><\/p>\n
— * — * —<\/b><\/font><\/p>\n Let’s try to distinguish between claims that are built on formal logic (and therefore correct) and claims that rely on human reason and feelings. Let’s start with a few simple examples of the first group:<\/p>\n — * — * —<\/b><\/font><\/p>\n And here are a few examples of claims that sometimes seem logical to us, but are not based on formal logic and are not necessarily true:<\/p>\n In short: We’ve become accustomed to the fact that artificial or complex objects in everyday life – always have a “creator”. It does not<\/b> logically follow from this that everything<\/b> has a creator. There is no shortage of examples in physics of things that are created “by themselves”.<\/p>\n In short: There is no physical law that states that “everything has a reason” – this is again a phenomenon that we have become accustomed to in everyday life. In fact, when we delve into physics into areas far from our everyday lives, we encounter events that happen probabilistically, things that appear and disappear on their own, and other strange and wondrous rules. It is possible, but unknown, that there is causality here which we have not yet discovered, but as of now our science lives peacefully even without it, even if our human logic “demands” it.<\/p>\n How do you measure “wonderful”, “complex” and “perfect”? And why “must”? What exactly is the level of admiration for something that requires that above it we must have a designer? In the eyes of our minds, the world is wonderful, complex and perfect. In the eyes of a stray cat, a mousetrap is also a “supernatural” object. The world is far from perfect, and as for wonder and complexity – they are in the eye of the beholder, or rather in our limited mind.
