We used to be few. We, humans, that is. The Biblical story talks about Adam and Eve, but even real science agrees that at certain times the Homo Sapiens population was tiny.
And then we became many. Very many. It is a nasty characteristic of evolution that makes the successful ones numerous, and eventually – too numerous. And the annoying part is that it generally happens more within less modernized populations.
But the most annoying part is seeing authorities actively encouraging this process. There are mainly two reasons for this, and they seem to be related. One reason has to do with what we know as the Prisoner’s dilemma: We need to be stronger that you, so we multiply more. You need to be stronger that us, so you do the same. Eventually we all suffer from population explosion and lack of resources.
While this argumentation may still be confronted somehow, there comes the second reason and puts an end to the rational discussion: We need to do it because God said so. Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. And when the earth is full of you – I will be there to help you. Or not.
