There’s a lot going on in currently the land of milk and honey. Much of it has to do with the special attitude of religion towards women.

Women are allowed to sing… as long as men don’t hear them. That is the up-to-date twist of the local religion. And what do you in certain public ceremonies where some singing is appropriate? You remove any singing plans altogether, so no one gets offended.

Women’s images are allowed to be displayed… as long as men don’t see them. Hence you master the art of Photoshop to remove women from pictures displayed in religious neighborhoods and media. Thus the government of Israel becomes somewhat smaller when observed via certain newspapers. Even the public ad of the new Smurfs movie had Smurfette removed, God forbid.

Women are not allowed to join the army, but if they still do, male soldiers are not allowed to be with them together in any kind of a closed vehicle. This stupid argument is in practice the real war of the region nowadays.

In Orthodox synagogues women are put in a separate zone, far away from the center, hidden from the men, who are not supposed to see them while praying. Even in ultra-Orthodox celebrations you will notice some sort of partition separating the two zones.

Being a witness in a religious court? Nah… Being a parliament member of an ultra-Orthodox party? Forget it. Women still have the privilege of not having to go through circumcision… well… almost… many Muslim ones still do.

It may be the land of milk and honey, but that’s because female cows and bees are better suited for the region.
