This one really pissed me off.
All this talks about the “Chosen People” always makes me feel uncomfortable. I am a Jew but I am not “chosen” in any way. Either I am the only person aboard (and all the rest are products of my imagination, a la Descartes) or everyone else is similarly “chosen”. And besides, using passive voice such as “chosen” implies there is someone who chooses… and we all know there isn’t.
“Chosen” is also somewhat a synonym for “Superior”. Not if you’re chosen, say, for execution, but that’s not our case, you know. The Nazis defined superior and inferior races, which went well with their ‘Gott Mit Uns’ (‘God With Us’) emblem.
All of the above came into my mind this week, upon seeing the following religious ad in Tel Aviv:

Yes, this ‘Chosen people’ thing makes we wonder, chosen for what? Maybe those who are to be taken up at some kind of judgment day and given eternal life or something like that. Which one of all that claim to be the chosen? In history even Scotland went through a ‘we are the chosen ones’ phase, something to do with an Egyptian princess or queen, Ha!

Just in case someone reads this and doesn’t know Hebrew :) the sign says: “Since a Jew is the owner of the world, the world also turns to the good.”
