All this talks about the “Chosen People” always makes me feel uncomfortable. I am a Jew but I am not “chosen” in any way. Either I am the only person aboard (and all the rest are products of my imagination, a la Descartes) or everyone else is similarly “chosen”. And besides, using passive voice such as “chosen” implies there is someone who chooses… and we all know there isn’t.
“Chosen” is also somewhat a synonym for “Superior”. Not if you’re chosen, say, for execution, but that’s not our case, you know. The Nazis defined superior and inferior races, which went well with their ‘Gott Mit Uns’ (‘God With Us’) emblem.
All of the above came into my mind this week, upon seeing the following religious ad in Tel Aviv:
